While in Haiti, I captured several photographs of handwriting and signs at Mission of Hope. From memory verses written in chalk on steel beams to a history lesson on a chalkboard, most of it was in French, as opposed to French Creole, which was surprising to me.

One important life lesson instilled in the children at Mission of Hope is the respect of property and an orderly environment. These ideals are hard to find outside the mission, and could very well be the seeds to social transformation in Haiti in the next generation.

Homes For Haiti

One and a half years after the earthquake, hundreds of thousands of Haitians still live in the toppled remains of their homes or in tent cities, where comfort is non-existent and disease is ubiquitous.

Mission of Hope is in the process of building a 500 home community for displaced Haitians. This month, 137 families are moving into brand new homes provided by MOH. These families will pay a "community fee" of $50US per month for five years and then they will be given a deed to the property. Each 16x19 foot three room home sits on a 42x90 foot lot which will be planted with various fruit and nut trees.

The next time you're tempted to gripe that your dishwasher quit working, try to remember how nice it is that you have running water and a roof.

Running, kicking and occasionally scoring, the game known as "soccer" or "futbol" is nearly ubiquitous wherever you go on this planet. Below are photographs of kids in Haiti playing futbol in a downpour and on a dusty, hot, field scratched in the dirt.

Notice the "poofs" of dust below this boy's feet as he leaps.

Although excruciatingly poor, there is joy on the face of a boy at play.

My Grandpa's Guitar

When my grandpa passed away, the old Vibratone guitar he used to play was given to me since I, too, play guitar (well, sort of). The guitar is a 1940-something model 972 and had to be repaired due to a serious fall it took. Now, repaired and cleaned up, it looks as good as . . . something old that's been taken care of :) . The coolest thing about it is the worn places clearly visible on the neck and fretboard where my grandpa's hands once moved and played music.

Phil Keaggy

I got to see Phil Keaggy in concert again recently, and, just like the other four times I've seen him live, by the end of the night I had wept at least once and my face was cramped from smiling. Are there other guitarists as technically capable as Keaggy? Mmmm probably. Are there any who play as beautifully? Nope. His creativity and sensitivity are a gift from the Spirit of God.

Setting up the pedals - these were actually borrowed, with the exception of the multi-switch Line 6 box in the left of the photo.

This was taken during the playing of "Legacy", in which Phil changes on the fly from a C tuning to C minor. A video (not from this venue) is posted below:

Phil employs looping techniques, usually with his JamMan processor. He didn't bring the JamMan along this time, instead opting for the Line 6 pedal he's getting ready to stomp in the photo above. In the video below, you can watch Phil playing "Shades of Green" using lots of looping, two capos, a shaker, and even some tiny cymbals!

The missing digit. Imagine if he had all ten fingers . . .

The acoustic guitar of choice for Phil is from Olson Guitars. They are handcrafted by one man, and prices start at $12,500. One of the guitar's features is the super strong laminated neck which is both functional and beautiful. You can see it in the final picture of this set below.

The volume swell technique. With a stray finger adjusting volume with each note, Phil gets some cool Ebow type effects with just the volume knob. The video below will show him doing a little bit of this coolness:

Winter Overtakes Autumn

The leaves from my sweetgum tree are now scattered from yesterday's winter storm. From the looks of these leaves, little icicles had formed on their tips while the temperatures hovered just at the freezing mark yesterday, and then when the wind picked up and the temperatures dropped to single digits last night the leaves let go of the tree but the tiny icicles remained attached to the leaf tips. Cool stuff. (The last one is from a sugar maple . . . )

That's why so many of the old photographs still around are sepia toned; they simply outlasted the standard black and white photographs. People love to have great photographs of themselves. Unfortunately, a trip to a professional studio ends up costing hundreds of dollars to get family or senior portraits done. With hiswhispers photography, you pay a flat rate and receive a CD with all your edited images on it. Where you choose to have your photos printed is entirely up to you, whether you print them at home or at a professional lab.

For $200.00, I will take your senior pictures or family portraits, perform all the editing work (including color correction, special effects and cosmetic fixes), and give you a CD with your finished images along with a copyright release form that gives you full rights to those images.

Other studios may offer very low prices on sitting fees, but their mark-up on print prices is quite high.

You or your family members can choose the location for the photo shoot, or I'll choose one of the many great places here in Jefferson County. If you'd like to bring a change of clothes or two, or even three, that's fine, too.
